About Natural HVACR 4 LIFE

A sustainability-focused research project exploring the use of CO₂ as a natural refrigerant.

Natural HVACR 4 LIFE is a research initiative rooted in Daikin’s Environmental Vision 2050 and co-funded by the European Union. The project is led by Daikin Europe N.V in partnership with Daikin Air conditioning Germany GmbH and Daikin AC Spain S.A.

Project objectives

Remove market barriers by exploring the viability (in terms of energy and safety) of an integrated refrigeration, heating and comfort cooling system that uses CO2 as a natural refrigerant.

Raise awareness among installers, engineers, customers and the general public on the potential benefits of using CO2 as a natural refrigerant in convenience stores

Contribute to the EU F-gas regulation which aims to phase down the carbon equivalent consumption of HFCs by 2030

Actions

1.Develop a Conveni-Pack prototype that integrates refrigeration, cooling and heating,  using CO₂ as a natural refrigerant, including heat recovery functionality and an option to add cold storage at a later stage.

2.Install, operate and monitor the energy efficiency and safety performance of multiple Conveni-Pack prototypes in  supermarkets across Europe, ranging from average to warm climates (Germany and Spain).

3.Research and develop an economically viable cassette indoor unit for comfort cooling and heating.

4. Based on the monitoring results, evaluate the potential contribution of adding cold storage to further reduce carbon emissions.

5. Establish training and training materials for installers and customers.

6. Communicate about the Life project through exhibitions, conferences and online tools.

7. Share project insights with policymakers and standardization bodies to facilitate the update of safety and energy related standards and labels.
